Kalpakanchery Melangadi Chantha

Historically, there was a weekly market known as the “Melangadi Chantha” held every Tuesday in Kalpakanchery. The market was located in the Melangadi area between Puthanathani and Kadungathukundu.

It served as a local commercial hub where people from nearby regions gathered to buy and sell agricultural produce, livestock, household goods, spices, coconuts, and other daily necessities. Before the advent of modern supermarkets and extensive transportation networks, such weekly markets played a vital role in the rural economy of Kerala.

As Kalpakanchery was part of the historically significant Vettathunadu region, the area maintained connections with medieval Malabar trade networks and merchants who traveled through the region.

Over time, with the development of roads, the establishment of permanent shops, and the growth of nearby commercial centers, the traditional weekly market gradually lost its former prominence. It eventually evolved into more modern forms of commercial activity.
